I have listed several well-established, local organizations that are always in need of good volunteers.

If you are not from the Galveston/Houston area, look for the following types of organizations to volunteer:

United Way of Galveston 

United Way partners with local agencies to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.


Galveston Island Humane Society 

The Galveston Island Humane Society, Inc. is solely dedicated to the cause and welfare of unwanted or homeless animals. This organization provides a temporary refuge for these animals, arranges placement in responsible homes, and provides community education toward the prevention of cruelty to animals and the instruction of humane pet care.


American Red Cross – Galveston Chapter 

The American Red Cross works within communities, providing relief to people who have suffered a disaster. We also help people prevent, prepare for and respond to a variety of emergencies. With your help, the promise of neighbor helping neighbor in times of trouble becomes a reality and our communities become safer places to live.


Bay Area Council Boy Scouts of America 

Volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America is a way for adults to work with youth to build a better future for everyone. Besides giving valuable service to youth in their communities, volunteers find that they reap many personal benefits from being a leader in Cub Scouting.


Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston 

Catholic Charities provides culturally sensitive social services to those in need, without regard to race, religion or socioeconomic status.


Communities in Schools

The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.


Family Service Center of Galveston County

Serving Galveston and the surrounding community since 1914, Family Service Center of Galveston County is a private, not-for-profit agency that is dedicated to enhancing the potential for growth of individuals and families. Family Service Center strives to assist people pursue healthy, independent and fulfilling lives through the provision of counseling, education and related social services.


Galveston County Food Bank – Gleanings From The Harvest

Gleanings stores and re-distributes this food to its members, a network of organizations that have identified and can rapidly deliver this food to the hungry of Galveston County. In this way, a variety of nutritious food items can be made consistently available all year-round to those who feed the needy.


Galveston County YMCA

The Y makes accessible the support & opportunities that empower people & communities to learn, grow & thrive. With a focus on youth development, healthy living & social responsibility, the Y nurtures the potential of every youth & teen, improves the nation’s health & well-being, & provides opportunities to give back & support neighbors.


Gulf Coast Big Brother’s Big Sister’s: 

For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.


Jesse Tree

The Jesse Tree is a faith-based, non-profit organization that connects people with the health care, social services and ministerial resources they need to rebuild their lives and uplift their spirits.


Resource & Crisis Center of Galveston County 

The mission of the Resource and Crisis Center of Galveston County is to promote the safety, well-being and best interest of victims of family violence, sexual assault and child abuse and to advocate for the prevention of such crimes.


Ronald McDonald House Galveston 

The Ronald McDonald House of Galveston is a “home away from home” for the families of children who are seeking medical treatment at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Shriners Hospital for Children and Transitional Learning Center.

The House is more than a place to stay; as an alternative to an isolated hotel room, the families and children enjoy cheerful surroundings and the support of other families, volunteers and staff.


Shriner’s Hospital for Children Galveston 

Shriners Hospitals for Children has a mission to:

  • Provide the highest quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries and other special healthcare needs within a compassionate, family-centered and collaborative care environment.
  • Provide for the education of physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Conduct research to discover new knowledge that improves the quality of care and quality of life of children and families.

This mission is carried out without regard to race, color, creed, sex or sect, disability, national origin or ability of a patient or family to pay.


St. Vincent’s House 

St. Vincent’s House is a 501(c)(3) non-profit social service agency providing comprehensive social services and community outreach programs for the entire family. St. Vincent’s House serves the disadvantaged, underserved and working poor population of the greater Galveston community with essential programs and services to enhance their mental, physical and spiritual well being.

Our services are designed to meet the real and immediate needs of our clients for food, shelter, healthcare and childcare.
